Fleas Love Summer – Prepare Your Home Now!

Everyone has had it happen to them: you feel a little sting on your skin and look down to see a small, black insect, but when you go to smack it away, it leaps away in the blink of an eye. Fleas are tiny, itchy, disease-carrying bugs that are hard to kill and even harder to live with. Anyone with pets knows how miserable it is living with a flea infestation, for the pet and for the owners.

Summer months mean more fleas. Even if you don’t own any pets, your home could be at risk through other factors. These include if your home is carpeted, if you’ve had an infestation of rats or mice, or if outdoor cats or other animals frequent your yard. All it takes is a few fleas to make it into your house, where their reproduction cycle can continue. Before you know it, you’ve got an infestation.

For most people, flea bites are itchy, annoying, and can keep you from being able to sleep well at night or enjoy time anywhere fleas are. Some people can be allergic, leading to hives, rashes, and infected bites. Pets are just as likely to be allergic, as well, leading to Flea Allergy Dermatitis and infections that cost way more than preventing fleas.

If you have pets, there are lots of flea treatments and preventives that help keep your cat or dog flea-free. However, many times, the adult fleas can jump off of a treated pet and onto another animal or even you! Eggs that were left in the carpet or on cloth sofas or beds can continue the reproductive cycle without having to be on your pet, using you as a food source. Treating your pets for fleas is a fantastic way to keep the fleas off of them, but doesn’t stop or prevent an infestation in your home.

Help keep your home protected by maintaining your pets’ flea prevention so they don’t pick up fleas outside, regularly vacuum carpets and take empty vacuum bags or dump vacuum filters in an outdoor trash can far from your home. Take measures to prevent rats or mice from entering your home, including professional pest control, and try to limit the number of neighborhood pets from lounging around your yard or home.

Spraying your lawn with insecticides can sometimes help control flea population, but be sure to confirm that the insecticide is safe for pets and children if they’ll be in your yard. Also, using general insecticides throughout your entire yard can cause a disruption in the natural ecology and damage plants and birds.
